In cooperation with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Georgia Department of Agriculture, The Georgia Structural Pest Control Training Center on the UGA Griffin Campus has recently completed construction of a facility whose goal is to train and educate termite control professionals on the proper pre-construction treatment of homes and commercial buildings for subterranean termite control.

Since 2003, those Georgia pest management professionals who engage in pre-construction treatment of homes and businesses for termite control have been mandated by the state to accrue on-going, continuing education in the category of pre-construction termite treatment. These hours are part of the normal training operators must receive if they are involved in the control of termites and other wood-destroying organisms. The new training facility will suit these operators’ needs and will provide Georgia’s new home and business owners the added confidence that their investments have been treated by skilled individuals.

Workshops involving the pre-treat facility will include classroom discussions on the philosophy of pre-treats, including the use of baits, wood treatments, and soil termiticides; interpretation of Georgia’s rules and regulations pertaining to pre-treats; construction types in light of the State’s pre-treat expectations; and calculating chemical use. Half of each workshop will involve hands-on training designed to re-enforce certain aspects of classroom discussions.

The new pre-treat facility compliments nicely the Center’s existing termite training facility. Since 1998, the existing facility has been instrumental in the training and education of hundreds of termite control professionals from across Georgia on the proper treatment of existing homes and businesses for subterranean termite control.

To learn more about the new pre-treat facility, or to register (pdf) for an upcoming workshop, contact Dr. Dan Suiter at 770-233-6114 or dsuiter@griffin.uga.edu.

Directions to the training facility and a list of local hotels are available.
